Sweden is a country located in the continent of Europe, in the region of Scandinavia. Officially the Kingdom of Sweden, it borders Norway to the west and Finland to the east. In the south, Denmark is connected by a bridge-tunnel over Øresund. Sweden is the third largest country in the European Union with a low population density per square kilometer. Most of the population is concentrated to the southern half of the country.
Ever since prehistoric times, germanic people have inhabited Sweden. There were the Svear and Gotar tribes, also contributing to the sea people known as the Vikings. Sweden has been an independent and unified country since the middle ages, and during the 17th century expanded into the Sweden Empire.
